A Sadak Fury progress update: 35 races across six states, 21 bikes, a five-league career, police chases and Wi-Fi multiplayer, and what's next.

Time for a proper progress update. Sadak Fury has grown a lot since our first post, when it was a single Kerala road with some fights on it. Here is where the game stands, and what's left before it reaches your phone.

What's in the game

35 races across six states. Kerala, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Himachal, West Bengal and Punjab each have short sprints, a full run across the state, and two extra routes with their own surprises. Five more are twists on the full runs: fog in the mountains, dust over the Thar, mist in the Kerala hills, winter fog in Punjab and a ghat road jammed with traffic.

A career across five leagues. You start as Arjun on a borrowed 150cc and work up from street races to the Legend league, finishing in the top three to qualify. Vikram, the champion, is the man you're chasing.

21 bikes in three classes, from a faded commuter to a 265 km/h hyperbike. You buy them, paint them, upgrade them and repair them at Sethji's garage.

Fights at full speed. Punches, kicks and seven weapons, from a bamboo lathi to a hockey stick. Two weapon hits or three punches or kicks knock a rider off. Kick a bike into a bus and the knockout is yours.

Police. Highway cops with lathis, a five-star wanted level with roadblocks and an impound, and a police mode where you ride the police bike yourself.

Riders with a memory. You and nine named rivals, with grudges, friendships, perks and grudge duels, plus painted comics that tell their stories between races. Read who they are.

Multiplayer without the internet. Up to 8 riders on the same Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot, with no data used and no servers involved.

Reasons to come back. Daily missions, a daily sprint, a seven-day bonus track and time trials against your own ghost.

All of it plays offline.

What we're working on now

The big features are in, so most of our time now goes into making them solid:

Phones, phones, phones. We keep testing on real phones, and the newest routes still need their full performance pass on the budget phones that matter most to us. You can read about that work so far.

Watching playtests frame by frame. Most of the bugs we fix are found by recording playtests on a phone and stepping through them frame by frame: riders sinking into roads, hands floating off handlebars, a train crossing that played out wrong. We'll share some of these stories here.

Polish everywhere. Forks in the road, tunnels, bridges and the busiest stretches of every route get looked at again and again until nothing in them feels off.

Getting the stores ready. Store pages, screenshots and all the paperwork that comes with them.

The website

This site has the game's states, riders and bikes, a support page with fixes for common problems, a press kit, our privacy policy and now this devlog. The privacy policy is short, because the game keeps your progress on your phone and doesn't track you.

What we won't do

A few promises from our design rules, which we think are worth repeating:

No internet needed. Not to start the game, not to race and not for multiplayer.

No accounts. Your progress stays on your device.

No blood. The crashes are cartoon crashes.

How to follow along

We'll keep posting here about the game, the fixes and the road to launch. If you use a feed reader, the devlog has an Atom feed. For questions, ideas or bug reports, write to support@sadakfury.com.

See you on the road.

Punches, kicks and weapon swings in Sadak Fury: how many hits knock a rider off, kicking bikes into traffic, stealing weapons, and fixing Rhea's grip.

Sadak Fury is a bike race and a bike fight game, and fights are where most of our playtest notes come from. The latest round of changes reworked fights in a few important ways, so here is the full picture.

The moves

You steer with one thumb and fight with the other. By default the throttle is automatic, so your fighting thumb is free to attack, kick, brake and burn nitro. Attacks aim at the nearest rider, on either side of you.

Punch. Quick, and it hits the rider. Punch a rider in the middle of his swing and you snatch his weapon from his hand.

Backhand. For the rider just behind you, trying to sneak past.

Kick. Slower, and only when you're level with him. A kick mostly hits his bike and shoves it a couple of metres sideways, into traffic, a wall, water or off the road.

Weapon swing. With a weapon in hand, the attack swings it, until it breaks.

The kick has its own story. In an early version, kicks and punches did the same thing, and a playtester said it plainly: "hand and leg have the same effect, everyone will use only the hand." So the kick became the bike-shover. Punches knock riders down. Kicks send bikes into buses.

How many hits

Here's how it works now:

Two weapon hits knock any rider off his bike, cops included.

Three punches or kicks do the same.

Kabir, the courier with extra stamina, takes one more.

Damage only starts to heal after 15 seconds without a hit, so a rider who just took two punches is in real danger.

Knockouts count even when traffic does the work. If you hit a rider and he crashes into a bus, a wall, a train or water within three seconds, that's your knockout. Every knockout you score also tops up your nitro tank by a quarter, so one good fight sets up the next overtake.

Crashing and getting back up

When you go down, it's a cartoon crash. The bike tips over and slides, you land a few metres away, get up, run back and climb on. The whole thing costs four or five seconds, which is a lot in a race and not the end of it.

Ride over a fallen bike and you get a small hop, a jolt of the camera and some lost speed. It never crashes you.

The weapons

Weapons break after a number of hits, and they're only visible during a swing, so you're never quite sure what a rival is holding. These are the ones in the game now:

Bamboo lathi: quick, but breaks fast.

Umbrella: Rhea's. Now and then it pops open in a rider's face and blinds him for a moment.

Cycle chain: Raghav's, with the longest reach.

Cricket bat: Tony's. It dents bikes and shoves them.

Hockey stick: Gurjot's. Sometimes it hooks the handlebar, and the bike wobbles.

Iron rod: Kabir's. It lasts the longest and wrecks bikes.

Police lathi: every cop carries one, and so does Vikram.

You unlock weapons as you climb the leagues. You can also keep a weapon you snatched by carrying it over a career finish line. Your collection lives in the Arsenal, a third garage page where each weapon spins on its own card, and you can pick the one you start every race with, except in Wi-Fi races and on police duty.

The truce

One more rule: nobody fights at a closed level crossing. When the booms are down and the train is coming, everyone waits, and nobody gets arrested either. We added it after playtests where riders got knocked off while queueing and slid under the booms. It also turned out to be a great moment of calm before everyone launches again.

Fixed: Rhea's grip

Before (left) and after (right): Rhea's hands now sit on the grips of every bike

Every rider shares one set of riding animations. On some bikes that left Rhea riding with her arm stuck out sideways, like she was hailing an auto. The fix was a grip system that places every rider's hands on the actual handlebar grips of every bike, whatever its shape. It's the kind of bug you only spot by watching a playtest recording frame by frame, and it's the kind of fix that makes everything look a bit more solid.

Fair and readable

Our fifth rule says every hit has a wind-up you can see. Rivals never swing in the first few seconds after GO, and bike damage shows on the bike itself, as dust and scratches and then smoke, so you can see a rival is nearly done before you go for the last hit.

Want to see it in motion? The gameplay reel on the home page is all real fights, recorded on our test builds.

The riders of Sadak Fury, from Arjun the new kid to Vikram the champion: their weapons, perks, and how grudges, duels and chai at the dhaba work.

The fourth rule we wrote for Sadak Fury was payback and personality: rivals have names, and they remember what you did to them. This post introduces the riders you'll meet on the road, and the system that makes them remember.

The riders

The riders come from all over India. We wrote them as people you might meet at a highway dhaba, not as costumes from a state: a courier, a cricket bowler turned internet star, an ex-police cadet. Most of them carry a weapon, and each has one small perk that helps when you ride as them.

Arjun is you, the new kid. He grew up in his uncle's garage watching Vikram win on a tiny TV, and he starts on a borrowed 150cc. His perk is extra XP from every race.

Vikram is the champion and boss of the Black Gold crew, nine years on top. He carries a police lathi and is a little better at everything.

Raghav is the brute with the cycle chain. His weapons last longer before they break.

Meera is the clean racer. She rarely fights, and her nitro refills faster.

Tony is the showman with the cricket bat, and he films every crash. His kicks shove bikes further.

Rhea is the retro rider with the umbrella, and it blinds riders twice as often.

Fathima is the hot-tempered pro. Her wanted level rises more slowly.

Kabir is the courier with the iron rod. He has extra stamina, so he takes one more hit before he falls.

Ananya is the tech kid who steals weapons. She has extra grip in sharp bends.

Gurjot is the highway rider with the hockey stick, in his dastar and goggles. He never hits first and always hits back, and his stick hooks handlebars more often.

Perks only apply to the rider you choose, and they're switched off in Wi-Fi races, so friends always race on equal terms.

Vikram: nine years on top of the league

Grudges: they remember

Every rival has a feeling about you, from −3 (sworn enemy) to +3 (best friend). It moves at most one step a race. Knocking someone off or stealing their weapon costs you a step. Avenging them, by knocking off whoever just knocked them off, earns one.

Some riders start with an opinion. Rhea already likes you quite a bit. Vikram already doesn't.

At −3, a rival hunts you. "RAGHAV IS HUNTING YOU!" appears, he comes after you in every race, and he challenges you to a grudge duel: one on one, on a sprint through his home state. Finish ahead of him to win; knock him off three times and he's out. Win, and he rides for you, and you can race as him.

At +3, a rival becomes a friend. Friends never attack you, give you tips, and join your riders.

The dhaba: tips, chai and taunts

Between races, the career hub is Sethji's dhaba, a roadside eatery that somehow stands on every highway in India. Two or three riders sit at the table, and you can TALK to them:

Ask for a tip. Free, unless he hates you.

Buy a chai. It warms a rival up a little. Once a day per rider.

Taunt. It makes things worse, but if you knock off the rider you taunted in the next race, you collect a bonus.

Challenge, when a grudge duel is open. Hear their story, and ride as them once they're on your side.

There's one limit: talking alone can never push a feeling past +2 or −2. Real friendships and real feuds are made on the road.

Every rider has a story

Sadak Fury tells its story in short painted comics that play between races, never in the middle of one. Every rider has an origin comic, and some share stories with each other. Some are funny and some are about old scores. You can skip any strip and replay it later from your rap sheet. We won't spoil any of them here.

Notes from the workshop

"TALK did nothing." In the first version you could tap a rider and nothing happened. Now every rider has real conversations.

Chai farming. Testing showed you could buy chai and taunt over and over, to make friends or open duels on demand. That's why talking is capped at ±2.

One language for everyone. We first wrote taunts in mixed Hindi and English. For players everywhere, the lines are now plain English, but we kept the single words that give them their flavour, like bhai, beta and oye.

Gurjot. He was added after a simple request in a playtest: add a sardarji character, a good one. He's a former hockey star with a strong sense of fairness and a very good hook.

A grudge duel: one on one, on his home road

Next up in the devlog: how fights actually work. You can also see every rider's card on the home page.

How the highway police work in Sadak Fury: bike cops with lathis, getting BUSTED, a five-star wanted level with roadblocks, and riding as police.

Every good highway race needs someone trying to stop it. In Sadak Fury that someone is the highway police: officers in khaki and white helmets with a blue band, on bikes with red and blue lights, and every one of them carries a lathi.

The police have three jobs in the game. They add danger to every race, they remember you across your career, and in one mode, you become them.

Getting BUSTED

Cops park on the shoulder and wait. When the pack comes through, they pull out and chase the nearest rider. If you end up off your bike within 25 m of a cop, or a cop knocks you off, you're BUSTED: the race is over and you pay a fine.

Cops get tougher as you climb the leagues:

Early leagues: cops never swing at you. They only arrest riders who have already fallen, which makes them a hazard you learn to read rather than a wall.

Later leagues: they swing their lathis, and they arrest rivals too, which can be very handy.

They give up. No cop chases you forever. After a while they peel off and wait for the next race.

You can fight back. Cops can be knocked off like anyone else, and it pays better than knocking off a rival. It also makes them angrier.

The wanted level

Your career keeps a police record: a wanted level from 0 to 5 stars, running from CLEAN through SUSPECT, WATCHED, HUNTED and MOST WANTED to PUBLIC ENEMY.

It rises when you hit cops, knock them off, escape them or run their roadblocks, by at most two stars a race. It falls with clean races, paid fines, time, and a bit of police duty (more on that below). The police treat you differently at each level:

0 to 2 stars: they only react to trouble near them.

3 stars: they chase you on sight, and they hunt only you.

4 stars: two extra cops join the race, and there's a ROADBLOCK: three police bikes across the left lane, with a gap on the right if you're brave. A warning appears 300 m before it, so you always get a chance.

5 stars: more cops, two roadblocks, and they never give up. Get busted now and your bike is impounded.

An impound doesn't end your career. The LOCKUP screen lets you ride another bike from your garage, pay to get yours back, or work it off. They never take your only bike.

Police duty: ride the police bike

From the main menu, POLICE puts you on the police bike, lights flashing and lathi in hand, in a race full of racers who want nothing to do with you. Your job is to bust five of them on a full run, or four on a sprint.

A bust takes two steps. Knock a racer off his bike, then pull up and stop beside him before he gets back on. The camera cuts to the arrest, and you move on to the next one. A racer who crosses the finish line has escaped.

You score more for busting the race leader and the most wanted rider, and a bonus if nobody escapes. Most racers just run, but some of them fight back. You can be knocked off on police duty, but you can never be busted.

In a career, a completed duty shift also lowers your wanted level and works off part of an impound. Sometimes the fastest way out of trouble is to put on the uniform for a day.

What went wrong along the way

Busted almost every race. We have an automated test rider that races the game over and over and logs what happens. In one batch it was BUSTED in 38 races out of 48. The cops rode with the pack all the way to the finish, so any fall anywhere meant an arrest. That's when cops learned to give up, and the test rider's podium rate went up with it.

The 14 km/h crawl. In one test, two cops waited in the rider's own lane on a mountain road and held him to walking pace for over 2 km. Now cops wait on the shoulder.

A wanted level that helped you. At 4 stars the police busted all seven rivals in one test race, which made the race easier, not harder. Now a high wanted level makes the police focus on you alone. Riding past a cop also no longer counts as escaping him.

Arrests you couldn't see. On police duty, the bike stopped 15 to 35 m past the fallen racer, and passing lorries hid the arrest. Now you pull up properly, and the arrest camera picks the best of several spots by the road to show the moment.

Inspector Rao of the highway police

Leading all of this is Inspector Rao, the highway officer every rider in the league knows by name. You'll meet him in the comics.

Built for budget phones: how we got Sadak Fury running smoothly

Our test phone ran Sadak Fury at 26 to 37 fps. How culled terrain tiles, plant impostors, a cheaper ground shader and AUTO graphics got it to 54 to 60.

A racing game has to feel smooth. If the frame rate drops just as a rival swings at you, the fight stops being fair. And most people in India don't play on flagship phones. So a lot of our time goes into one question: does Sadak Fury run well on an everyday Android phone?

Our main test phone for this is a OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite, a mid-range phone with a Snapdragon 695. When we first put all six states on it, it managed 26 to 37 frames per second, and sometimes dropped to a 30 fps cap. Here is how we got it to 54 to 60 fps on the lowest graphics level, across all six states.

Where the time was going

Profiling showed three big costs:

The landscape. Each state's hills were one big mesh of hundreds of thousands of triangles, and the phone drew all of it whether you could see it or not.

Plants. Distant foliage was drawn as full plants. One tea estate alone cost around 11 million triangles a frame. Nobody can count tea bushes at 120 km/h.

The ground shader. Our painted ground looked lovely and cost about 14 ms a frame on this phone. At 60 fps a whole frame only has 16.7 ms.

What we changed

Terrain in tiles. The landscape is now cut into 250 m tiles, and only the tiles in view are drawn, a fraction of the whole.

Props culled one by one. Lamp posts, stalls, trees and walls are hidden individually when they're off screen, instead of in big groups.

Impostors for distant plants. Far-away plants become flat painted cards that look the same from a distance at a tiny fraction of the cost. Up close, you still get the real thing.

A cheaper ground. On lower graphics levels the ground uses a simpler shader that keeps the painted colours and drops the expensive detail.

Lighter town buildings far away. Each town building has a simpler far version, used beyond a set distance for each graphics level.

Smaller crowds when needed. The front row of fans at the start and finish always stays. On lower levels the back rows thin out, and the side fans disappear once you're at speed.

Mountain roads carry the heaviest scenery: hillsides, forests and far peaks

AUTO: picking the right level for your phone

Sadak Fury has four graphics levels, MAX, HIGH, MED and LOW, plus AUTO, which is the default. We didn't want players digging through settings just to get a smooth race, so AUTO makes the choice itself:

It makes a first guess from your phone's graphics chip, memory and processor cores.

It watches the frame rate during the countdown, and can step down before the race even starts.

If the game struggles during a race, it drops a level.

If there's plenty of headroom, it tries a level up and keeps it only if the game holds steady.

It remembers what works on your phone, so the next race starts at the right level straight away.

Step 4 has a story behind it. Our first version stepped up whenever the graphics chip looked lightly loaded. It turned out phones slow their graphics chips down when there's little work to do, so a "lightly loaded" chip told us nothing. Now AUTO tests a step up for real, and if the step fails it waits longer before trying again.

There was a second lesson on the Nord: it kept flipping between 60 and 30 fps. The fix was patience. AUTO now waits for a few seconds of genuinely low frame rate before dropping to 30.

Loading faster

Each road is built when you start a race, and at first that froze the screen for several seconds. Now the world is built step by step behind a loading screen, so the game stays responsive while it loads.

Smaller where it counts

Download size matters on a phone too. For example, the painted skies of Himachal and West Bengal were imported at 4096 pixels, which added 8 MB each to the Android package. At 2048 they look the same on a phone screen, so they're 2048 now.

The basics

Sadak Fury runs on Android 8.0 or newer and iOS 15 or newer.

It plays in landscape, and the screen stays awake for the whole race.

The whole game plays offline. No connection needed, so no lag spikes from the network.

Performance isn't a one-time job. Every new road and feature gets the same check on the same phones before it ships. If your phone struggles, the support page has tips, and we'd love to hear which phone you play on.

Kerala, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Himachal, West Bengal and Punjab: a tour of the six highways in Sadak Fury, from the Pink City to Spiti.

Sadak Fury now has six states on its map. Each one is a full road with its own look, its own traffic and its own riding challenge, and each squeezes a long real-world journey into about 10 km of racing. Here is the tour, west to east and south to north.

Every road follows the same pattern we built for Kerala: six stretches, each with something you would only see on that road. A city start, a fast section, a climb with hairpins, and a finish under a gate that belongs to the place.

Kerala: Fort Kochi to the Munnar tea hills

The first road and still the greenest. It starts under the Kochi metro with the fishing nets on the sea wall, runs a long backwater straight past houseboats, climbs through rubber villages and rainforest past a big waterfall, and twists through nine hairpins up to the tea hills of Munnar.

Rajasthan: the Pink City to the Golden Fort

You start inside a triple-arched pink city gate, in a bazaar of pink arcades below a honeycomb palace facade. The road runs along a lake past a water palace, climbs to a hilltop fort and through its gate, crosses a rocky ridge with stacked hairpins, a stepwell and chhatris, then opens onto 2.4 km of desert straights, the best nitro stretch in the game. The finish is in Jaisalmer, under a golden gateway below the fort.

Rose-pink and honey-gold stone against bright sand, under a sky that is always dry and blue.

Rajasthan: rose-pink city, desert straights, golden fort

Maharashtra: Mumbai to Pune

Mumbai starts beside a basalt harbour arch, among Victorian-Gothic and Art Deco blocks, with black-and-yellow taxis and red double-deckers. There are no autos here, just as in real South Mumbai. Then comes the seafront and the game's first sea bridge, a cable-stayed span high above the waves.

After that the road climbs the Bhor ghat through layered black basalt, crosses a plateau of wildflowers with a hill fort and turning wind turbines, and runs flat out through tall sugarcane. The finish is in Pune, past river ghats and a festival pandal with dhol drummers, under a big fort gate.

Himachal: Shimla to Spiti

The mountain road. It starts in Shimla under a stone railway viaduct, with a toy train on it, and the first snow peaks in the game. It follows a turquoise river up the Beas gorge, past a plunge waterfall that the road crosses below on a stone arch bridge. Deodar forest, apple orchards and yaks follow, then the Rohtang hairpins above the tree line, with prayer flags and old snow by the road.

Over the top it becomes a cold desert: the Spiti highway along a braided river, stupas and poplars, and a finish below a white monastery in Kaza.

West Bengal: Kolkata to Bishnupur

West Bengal is set in the festival season. Kolkata starts under a bamboo-and-cloth festival gate, among red-brick offices and trams under their wires. Then you ride through a giant steel truss bridge over the river. Beyond the city the earth turns red: sal forest, white kash grass, painted mud houses, and wild elephants crossing the road. The road runs along a dam crest beside a blue lake, past a huge painted Chhau mask, then across the flattest, greenest paddy highway in the game to the terracotta temples of Bishnupur.

Punjab: Amritsar to Patiala

Punjab is set in spring, with the mustard in bloom. You leave Amritsar through a red-brick city gate and a bazaar hung with phulkari, then follow a wide canal lined with white eucalyptus, where buffaloes cross. The road climbs the Shivalik foothills over a causeway across a dry sand riverbed, rides a pine ridge above a turquoise dam lake, then runs dead straight through mustard fields past highway dhabas and houses with water tanks shaped like aeroplanes and footballs. The finish is a royal gateway in Patiala.

Punjab in spring: canal roads and mustard fields

What every road shares

A few things are the same on every road, because they make the game what it is:

Two-way traffic with the local mix: autos and buses, tractor-trolleys in Punjab, cycle rickshaws in Jaipur, trams in Kolkata.

People. Villagers walk the verges, and every start and finish has a cheering crowd behind the banners.

A climb with hairpins, because hairpins are where fights get interesting.

A fast section for nitro, because sometimes you just want to fly.

We built the roads on the Kerala template, and every road had to pass the same checks before it counted as done: no props floating or sunk in the ground, nothing standing in the water, and nothing on the road that the camera could fly through.

Want to see them in motion? The states section of the home page has art and screenshots from all six.

How we built Sadak Fury's Kerala road: six stretches from the Fort Kochi fishing nets to the Munnar tea hills, a painted look and the bugs we fixed.

Kerala was the first road we built for Sadak Fury, and it set the bar for everything after it. The idea was simple: one ride should feel like a road trip across the whole state. In reality the places on our route are a long day's drive apart. In the game they are one 10.5 km run.

Six stretches, one ride

The Kerala road is split into six stretches, and each one has to look, sound and ride differently from the last.

Kochi city and Fort Kochi. You start under the metro viaduct, with the Chinese fishing nets on the sea wall and a white church on the corner.

The backwaters. A long, fast straight beside a canal, houseboats drifting past and humped bridges that throw you into the air.

Rubber belt villages. Rows of rubber trees, red laterite walls and a temple with a tiered roof.

The rainforest. The road dives into dense green and passes close to a big waterfall, which faces the road so you see it coming.

The Churam hairpins. Nine hairpins behind chevron barriers, where braking well beats being brave.

Munnar tea summit. Tea hedges follow the slope, pluckers work the rows, and the finish arch is made of bamboo.

The backwater straight: the fastest stretch in Kerala

Chasing the painted look

We wanted Sadak Fury to look like a painting that moves, with bright colour, puffy clouds and a roadside packed with life, without asking more of a phone than it can give. The road went through several look passes, each compared side by side with the concept art:

Painted materials. The ground, verges, walls and even the sky are painted, and they're lit by a simple shader that keeps the colours flat and bold.

A horizon that never ends. Hills, palms and distant ranges wrap around the whole track as continuous bands, so you never see the edge of the world.

Forests that work from every angle. Our first forest was a flat wall of trees that looked like cardboard from the side. We rebuilt it as a forest of tree cards that always face you, and it now looks full from any angle.

A real waterfall. The first waterfall was a picture. It is now a 3D fall in a forested gorge, with two layers of water and mist at the bottom.

Things that broke on the way

Every look pass broke something. Some highlights:

The camera that flew through the fishing nets. On the Fort Kochi stretch, the chase camera kept flying straight through the bamboo boom of a fishing net, which filled the screen with a brown slab for a moment. We moved the nets out over the water, where they belong, and added a check that pushes anything placed near the road out of the camera's path.

Leaves in your face. Dense foliage is great until a palm frond fills the whole screen. Now foliage, tree cards and mist fade out as the camera gets close, so the road always stays readable.

The ghat that ate the road. On the climb to Munnar, the hillside sometimes cut into the road itself. We rebuilt the ghat so the slope follows the road in fine 2 m ribbons, and every cutting gets a tapered stone retaining wall, like the real ghat roads.

Buses standing on their noses. A few traffic models arrived with the wrong rotation, so for a while Kerala had buses buried in the tarmac. That fix was quick, and the screenshots were funny.

Life on the road

A Kerala road isn't empty, so ours isn't either. Autos, fish carts, state buses and lorries painted with HORN OK PLEASE share the road with you, and jeeps take over near Munnar. Villagers walk along the verge in groups. Cows, goats and elephants stand by the temples and in the forest, with the plants cleared around them so you can actually see them.

Climbing towards Munnar: tea hedges and hairpins

Kerala has company now

Kerala was the template. It gave us a track generator, a painted look and a long list of rules, such as "never let the camera fly through a prop", that every later road had to follow. With that template in place, the rest of the map came together quickly, and Kerala now has five neighbours on the road trip across six states.

If you're new here, start with our welcome post, or see all six states on the home page.

Meet Sadak Fury, a bike race and fight game for phones set on Indian highways: what we're building, the five rules behind it and what already works.

Sadak means road. Sadak Fury is a bike race and fight game set on the highways of India, and this devlog is where we'll show how it gets made: what works, what breaks, and what we change after every playtest.

If you have ever ridden through Indian traffic, you already know the setting. Buses that own the road, autos that appear from nowhere, a cow parked calmly in the middle lane. Now add seven rival riders who want you off your bike, and a highway cop with a lathi who wants all of you off it.

Race and fight with one thumb each

The whole game is built around one idea: you never stop racing to fight. Your left thumb steers. Your right thumb punches, kicks and brakes. A rival pulls level, you swing, he wobbles into the verge, and you are already looking for the next one.

We wrote down five rules before building anything, and every feature has to serve at least one of them:

Speed and fighting in one thumb. A first-time player should land a kick within 30 seconds, without reading a tutorial.

Classic feel, modern look. A low chase camera, a dense roadside rushing past, crests, two-way traffic, bike-to-bike brawls and cartoon crashes, drawn in a bright, painted style.

Unmistakably local. Every stretch of road should have something you would only see on that road.

Payback and personality. Rivals have names, and they remember what you did to them.

Fair and readable. Every hit has a wind-up you can see, and every crash has a cause you can point to.

One more rule sits under all of them: crashes are cartoon crashes. Riders flop, roll, dust themselves off and run back to their bikes. There is no blood in Sadak Fury.

The first road: Kerala

We started with Kerala because it packs more variety into a short ride than almost anywhere else. In one run you pass the Chinese fishing nets of Fort Kochi, ride under the metro viaduct, cross the backwaters with houseboats drifting beside the road, and climb through rubber plantations and rainforest towards the tea hills of Munnar. Somewhere on the way there is a waterfall in a forested gorge, facing the road so you can't miss it.

Getting all of that to look right on a phone screen at speed took a few rounds. The next post covers how the Kerala road came together.

Kerala, the first road we built: backwaters, palms and paddy fields

What already works on the road

Here is what you can already do in the current build:

Ride. The handling is arcade, not simulation: grippy, quick to turn and forgiving. A real 5-speed gearbox sits behind the rev counter, and every bike's brake light glows when you brake.

Fight. Punches and kicks land with an impact star, a short hit-stop and a kick of the camera, so you feel every one. Knock a rider off and his bike tips over; he picks himself up, runs back and climbs on again.

Race named rivals. Eight rivals from across India, each with a name, a look and a few lines to shout at you.

Dodge traffic. Buses, lorries and autos come both ways, and the roadside has villagers walking about, along with cows, goats and the odd elephant.

Run from the police. Highway cops on bikes patrol with lathis. Get caught off your bike near one and you're BUSTED, with a fine to pay.

Burn nitro. Hold the button for a hard shove of speed, then let the tank refill itself.

The game also runs on a real Android phone now: landscape, touch buttons or swipe steering, and graphics levels with an AUTO setting that picks the right one for your phone. The screen stays awake for the whole race, so it never dims while you ride.

Made for phones, made to play offline

Sadak Fury is a phone game first. Races are short enough for a bus stop, and you can play the whole thing offline. You don't need an account or a connection to race.

We also care a lot about how it runs on everyday phones, not just flagships. That's its own story, and it will get its own post.

What's next

Kerala is the first road, not the last. More states are on the map, starting with Rajasthan: a run from the Pink City to the Golden Fort.

We'll post here as things come together, with screenshots, the problems we hit and how we solved them. If you want to know what Sadak Fury is about right now, the home page has the riders, the bikes and the states. Thanks for riding along.
